Site species count:
This area contains two very different sites, Albert Village Lake which includes a large expanse of open water excellent for a wide range of notable birds and Pick Triangle, an attractive 30 hectare young woodland. Both sites have been created on land reclaimed after coal and clay extraction.
Albert Village Lake is a former claypit that now consists of a scenic large central lake surrounded by paths. It is located a mile away from Swadlincote and three miles from Ashby-de-la-Zouch. A circular walk is possible around the lake. Albert Village took its name from the Albert Brick and Tile Works, named after Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert.
The lake is attracts many birds including Glaucous, Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls, in addition to Kittiwakes being recorded in the spring and autumn. In the reed areas around the site, you may well see Reed Warblers or Water Rail.
