An aniseed or almondy smell and a smooth cap that slowly colours ochre when bruised. Cap white and convex when young, flattening out completely with maturity. Smell of anise or almonds. The stem has a white and persistent membranous ring.  Spore print is dark chocolate brown.

There are several similar species - the toxic Yellow Stainer and some inedible related species quickly turn yellow when cut or bruised.

This is a difficult speces to identify with certainty from a photo.   Expert verification prior to submssion to NatureSpot is recommended.  Also photograph from top down, in side view and from underneath to show gills and full length of stipe.  Note habitat and substrate.

Fairly frequent and widespread in southern Britain, less well recorded further north.

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
