Description
A mainly black species well covered with long bristly hairs.
Similar Species
Athrycia species are similar.
Identification difficulty
ID checklist (your specimen should have all of these features)
- arista with very short pubescence
- eyes without hairs
- r1 vein with dark, bristle-like hairs
- sharply-angled m-cu vein
- strong down-curved parafacial bristle (see ID Aids below)
- absence of median discals on tergites 3 & 4
Identification aids

Habitat
Various habitats, flower meadows, scrub, waste ground etc.
When to see it
Late June to early October, peaking in late August - early September.
Life History
Larvae parasitise moths of the Plusiidae family.
UK Status
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain with most records coming from south of the Humber.
VC55 Status
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
