A medium to large sized tree which has slightly lobed, broadly-ovate leaves. Pendulous yellow catkins to 8cm in length. Nuts held within a deeply fringed husk.

Occasionally cultivated in parks, gardens, plantations and, increasingly, as a street tree. It is rare as a naturalised tree in Britain.

Catkins in early spring, followed by nuts.

Deciduous tree.

It is rare in the wild in Britain.

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. It was not recorded in the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire.
