Male hiemalis can be distinguished by the fused gonocoxal bridge, usually forming an acute tip. It also often has an outgrowth on the ninth sternite.

Detailed examination may be necessary to identify to species level.

Woodland and other damp areas, especially where old trees and their associated fungi are found.

Autumn through to spring, probably peaking in October.

A polyphagous species recorded from many species of fungi, as well as from other decaying material.

Widespread in the southern half of Britain with fewer records further north.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
