Wingspan 15 to 22 mm. Quite a well marked and distinctive species.

Woodland.

Flies from May to July when it may be found at rest on tree trunks.

The larvae feed from September through the winter months in dead wood, or on bracket fungus, especially those growing on Beech or Oak.

Locally distributed throughout much of mainland Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation'’s Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
