The adults show strong dark-grey mottling of the wings with occasional white areas, but when resting on tree trunks with wings folded they are well camouflaged.

Tipula truncorum has a similar ppearance, but is a larger species and the wing patterning is slightly different. Length: 19 to 21 mm.  Wing Length: 15 to 21 mm.

  Size is important when identifying ths species.

Please provide photograph showing wing patterning and state the size (wingspan) of the specimen.

A woodland species.

Adults on the wing between May and July.

The larvae can be found under the bark of dead logs and branches.

Widespread in Britain but not particlarly common.

Rarely recorded in VC55 (Leicestershire and Rutland).  The record from Burbage Wood on 6th June 2024 was only the fourth for our area.  It was previously recorded at Croxton Park in 2004 and twice at Buddon Wood in 2011.
