A wetland species, but it avoids the most acidic wetlands. 

Adults can be recorded from May until September.

The larvae develop in aquatic pulmonate snails in shallow, often stagnant water.

T. ferruginea is a common wetland species in most parts of Britain.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
