Description
12 mm. A wasp mimic, with a yellow band across its black abdomen. The head and thorax are black, but the face is yellow. Males have black hind tibia whereas in females it is yellow except for a black tip.
Habitat
Hedgerows and meadows where the food plants are present.
When to see it
The adults are common between May and late summer
Life History
The adults take small insects as well as pollen and nectar from various plants such as Hogweed, Hawthorn and Bramble.
UK Status
Fairly widespread and frequent in Britain.
VC55 Status
Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
