Tenthredo ferruginea
Length 10 to 13 mm. Thorax is black with pale side bands. The black antennae have a broad white band towards the end. The abdomen colour is variable but is usually red, or reddish-yellow, with some black. The wings have a unicolorous yellowish-brown stigma. The top of the head is punctured with a bronze sheen between the punctures.
Other species also have the white banded antennae and a white 'mouth'.
T. livida can be distinguished by having two-tone stigma - the apical two thirds brown and the basal third pale.
T. balteata has a black or dark brown stigma.
Hedgerows and woodland
May and June
Larvae feed on leaves of various plants.
Fairly frequent in Britain, but not well recorded.
Uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland.
