A small species, 4.5 - 5.5mm (females larger), and very variable. Some forms have clear and almost unspotted wings; others have dark brown wings or wings banded with brown or darker towards the apex. Usually 3 short dark stripes along forewing edge. The forewing veins have tubercles along them, and there are small tubercles between the veins along the apical margin part of the forewing. 

Distinguished from Cixius species by the presence of dark tubercles between the veins near to the wing tips.  It is smaller than the commmon C pilosus.

Deciduous trees and shrubs.

Adult: May to July.

The larvae feed at the base of various grasses.
