Sylvicola cinctus is a medium sized gnat and has well marked wings, dark wing tips, with 3 dark stripes on the top of the thorax. It is very similar to other members of the genus and detailed examination is necessary.

Reliable separation of Sylvicola cinctus from S. fenestralis requires checking of the genitalia, though S. fenestralis is said to typically bear black stripes on the thoracic dorsum (usually brown in S. cinctus). S. cinctus is usually slightly smaller than S. fenestralis with a maximum wing length of 6 mm.

Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required, and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.

Often found near to buildings and also indoors at times. It may be found around sewage beds and in places with damp, rotting vegetation.

All year round.

Larvae are found in decaying matter.

Widespread in Britain.  Sylvicola cinctus is believed to be the most common member of the genus.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
