Length 6 to 7 mm with tibia-length tarsi and black legs. Characterised by having a central keel at the base of the abdominal tergites. Males have strongly thickened hind femora but simple, spurless tibiae.

It is able to withstand a wide range of environmental conditions but mostly found in damper areas and wetland habitat.

All year round.

Widespread and quite common in Britain.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 412 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
