Length 5.5 to 6 mm.  This species has noticeable orange spots on the elytra. Other identifying features are black legs, hind tarsi nearly as long as hind tibia and the fact that the basal segment of the palps, and only the very base f the second segment are yellow.

Stenus biguttatus is very similar, though is slightly smaller, and examination of the male genitalia is normally required.

Usually near to the edge of water bodies, often manmade lakes and reservoirs.

Has been recorded in most months of the year, with the peak between March and September.

Fairly widespread in England and Wales.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
