Sporangia occur in small clusters or scattered; they are short-stalked, broad, cylindrical, pale when young turning lilac grey or pale brown as they mature. Total height 2.5 to 5 mm.  The stalk accounts for about 50% of the height, and the spore carrying body (Capillitium) the rest.

Grows on damp, dead wood.
