Wingspan 32-35 mm. A drab brown moth that gets its name from the square spot on each wing.

Found in woodland edges, waste ground and suburban habitats.

A frequent visitor to the light-trap, it flies in August and September.

The nocturnal caterpillars feed during the winter, mainly on grasses, but also on other low-growing plants.

A very common species in Britain. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Very common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
