The amazing striated bark, which is reminiscent of the skin of a snake, is a mix of reds, greens and white. Pale yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by pendulous winged fruits. It has large mid-green, slightly glossy, toothed leaves.

Sometimes planted as an ornamental.

Uncommon or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. It was not included in the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire.
