Wingspan 26 to 32 mm. With its silky whitish upperwings and diffuse dusky spot, it is quite distinctive moth, and a favourite amongst enthusiasts.

Various habitats, especially where the larval foodplants occur.

It flies in June and July and is attracted to light.

The larvae feed on umbellifers, particularly Wild Carrot.

This species is a local resident along the coastal areas of the south and south-east, and also an occasional migrant. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
