Cap is domed initially, expanding to become convex, rarely flat.  It has large upturned brownish scales on the pale cap with a smooth brown area in the centre.  The stipe is smooth, lacking the snakeskin pattern of the Parasol.   There is a large soft ring which can often be moved up and down the stem. Flesh turning red when cut, gills bruise reddish or brownish.  Spore print is pale cream.
