30 to 100 cm tall with sharply three angled, leafy stems. Leaves keeled, to 10 mm wide with rough edges. Inflorescence either a dense head of spikelets, or more loosely branched. Spikelets are 10 to 20 mm long, ovoid, dark red-brown. Glumes to 7mm long.

Bolboschoenus laticarpus

Due to similarity with B laticarpus, either obtain confirmation from a County Recorder before submitting a record, or submit detailed images showing key features.  We recommend that you take and retain a specimen; the County Recorder may wish to see this for confirmation. 

Wet environments. Mainly coastal but there are a number of records inland.

Flowers July and August.

Perennial.

Widespread and fairly frequent in coastal areas of Britain, more localised inland.

Infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland and not recorded in the Flora of Leicestershire (Primavesi and Evans 1988)
