Length 1.75 to 2.25 mm. The elytra are red-brown or chestnut brown usually with a dark brown mark behind the scutellum and have long, mainly backward-pointing hairs.

The only similar Scymnus is S. limbatus which is found on deciduous trees in wetland, so habitat can be important when determining species.
