Size: 6 to10 mm. One of two Sciapteryx species in Britain. This species is distinctive and recognisable from the rectangle of orange spots created by the orange tegulae and wing base and largely orange stigmae. The abdomen is black with white stripes.

In view of the rarity of this species in our area records must be supported by photographs.

Possibly associated with Buttercups.

April and May.

Sciapteryx soror larvae are unknown but possibly feed on buttercups.

Very local, but widespread in England, also found in Scotland.

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland.
