Nothofagus obliqua is a fast-growing tree which may reach 20 metres in height. It has alternate leaves in two opposite rows, ovate, shortly toothed, 4 to 7 cm long, dark green above, pale glaucous below. There are similar species, and care is needed with identification.

Usually found as a planted tree in parks or roadside verges.

Flowering April or May.

Deciduous.

Widespread but infrequent in Britain. Usually found as a planted tree.

Infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. Most of the known specimens are fairly young trees found in parks in Leicester, where is has occasionally been planted.
