Cap 1 to 4 cm in diameter. Convex to flat, umbonate. Grey to brown grey starting with a whitish bloom. Shiny when wet. Gills free, crowded, grey. Stem also grey, rooting in substrate.  Has rancid, unpleasant smell

Found growing from the ground, solitary in deciduous woodland.

Autumn to early winter.

Widespread though nor particularly common in Britain.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
