The aecial stage of the rust fungus Puccinia recondita s.lat. causes galls on plants in various families including Ranunculaceae and Boraginaceae (e.g on Meadow-rue Thalictrum flavum, or Bugloss Anchusa arvensis and Viper's Bugloss Echium vulgare).  The orange aecia are borne on swollen or raised areas on the leaves. 

The primary generation is on ceeals and grasses causing yellowish to brown spots on the leaves.  It is not a gall-causer on this host.  It is likely to be a complex of species, varieties and subspecies.

The taxonomy of this species complex is unresolved.  See Plant Parasites of Europe for more detail.  It is best treated in a broad sense, as 'sensu lato'.

Puccinia persistens may be the name of the rust that appears in the aecial stage on Meadow-rue, with Elytrigia (Couch) as the primary host.
