Wingspan 38 to 43 mm. Characterised by its four cross-lines or 'lutestrings' on the inner part of the forewing, this species sometimes shows a slight purplish tinge when fresh.

Around Poplars and Aspen.

June and July is the typical flight time for this moth.

The caterpillar feeds on Poplar species, especially Aspen, hiding between two joined leaves.

There are three races recognised, occurring in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
