Description
Wing length 5 to 7.5 mm. P. clypeatus is rather broader bodied than other similar species, but careful examination is necessary to ensure correct identification.

Various habitats, including both dry grassland and wet meadows, or even woodland rides.
When to see it
April to October, peaking in July and August.
UK Status
One of the most common and widespread hoverflies in Britain.
VC55 Status
Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
