Description
Length 9 to 12 mm. Plateumaris sericea shows amazing colour variation, ranging from blackish-blue to red with heavily pitted elytra.
Similar Species
Plateumaris discolor is similar, but mainly found around acid waters.
Identification difficulty
Habitat
Around ponds where the larval foodplants are present.
When to see it
Peak time is May to July.
Life History
The larval food plants are bur-reeds (Sparganium sp.).
UK Status
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
VC55 Status
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 26 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
