The name of this species derives from the fact that the tarsi (feet) on the front and mid legs are yellow. This distinguishes luteitarsis from all other Pipiza species.

Well-wooded areas and hedgerows, particularly those containing Elm scrub.

April to August peaking in late May and June.

The larvae feed on Schizoneura aphids which curl the leaves of Elm. Males can sometimes be seen hovering in sunny spots, about 2-3 metres up, around Elm scrub.

This species is uncommon but widespread in England.

Uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland.
