Wingspan 27-30 mm. A rather variable mix of yellow undertones and pink to maroon markings, it is best identified by its reddish head and upper shoulders.

Frequenting mainly damp woodland and marshy areas.

It is single-brooded, flying in September and October, when it will visit sugar as well as artificial light.

The young larvae feed inside the catkins of Willow and when more mature, on a range of herbaceous plants.

A widespread and fairly common species over much of the British Isles. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
