Description

Length 7.5 to 10 mm. The male fly is beige-brown in thorax and abdomen, the female's abdomen is somewhat darker than the male's.

Meadows, gardens etc where they visit various flowers for nectar.

When to see it

May/June to September/October.

Life History

The larvae are found in decaying leaf litter.

Fairly frequent and widespread in England and Wales.
