One of many similar members of the Hawthorn family, and care is needed for species identification. See under ‘ID Guidance’ for the details of the key identification features. 

Leaves lobed < 1/3 to middle, 5 styles, leaves glabrous below & inflorescence stalks with shaggy hairs, 10 stamens and spines. 

A set of good quality images are needed to support records showing the main identification features, and a specimen may be requested.

Sometimes planted in country parks, roadside verges etc.

Flowers in May.

Decidous perennial.

Very occasional records scattered across Britain. 

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
