Like a smaller, hairier and often more orange looking version of Helophilus. The various species of this genus are difficult to separate in the field, or even from photographs.

Where the subject of an image has not received genitalia examination, which is necessary to be certain of accuracy in this species, it is highlighted with a red box. For that reason it is only claimed as likely to be this species

Parhelophilus versicolor is widespread throughout England but never common.

Infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
