A large Psathyrella, but thin and fragile, often crumbling.  The cap is ochraceous when young but soon becomes pale grey or cream or whitish.  There are flecks of the white veil at the cap edge. Gills are crowded, pinkish-brown to greyish-brown.  The stem is white, hollow and  fibrillose, and there is no ring. 

Other Psathyella.  P leucotephra is similar but has a ring.

June to November in Britain and Ireland.

Widespread and common

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.

Kibby (Vol.3. 2021) names this species Candolleomyces candolleanus and remarks that this is 'a species complex yet to be sorted out.'
