This species has sparingly branched green thalli of 1 cm plus. They are plain looking with a weakly defined midrib and lack any surface network. It is monoicous species, with male organs appearing like tiny volcanoes along the line of the midrib, and the female organs on the same thallus being surrounded by a vertical flap.

A photo of the sex organs is required to identify this to species level.

Prefers the banks of streams, rivers and ditches, forming a dense band just above the normal water level on shaded banks. May also be found on ground in other moist habitats such as wet woodland, marshes and flushes, or on wet rock outcrops. It cannot tolerate base rich sites.
