General colour brown and buff.  Hind tarsal rings occupy about half of the segments, but sometimes less.

Ochlerotatus cantans is very similar. If the hind tarsal rings clearly occupy half of the segments or more – it is likely to be annulipes; if they clearly occupy a third or less, then it is probably cantans. For individuals where the hind tarsal rings occupy between a third and a half it may be necessary to refer to male genitalia. 

Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required, and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.

Larvae from February to June, adults April to September.

Widespread records from the southern half of Britain.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
