Submerged, aquatic, delicate, pale green plant with whorled leaves, usually in threes The leaves are strap-shaped.

Elodea canadensis and Elodea nuttalli are very similar but can be separated by the leaf shape. E. canadensis has more oval leaves whilst E. nuttalli has strap-shaped leaves.

Widespread and frequent in England and Wales.

Locally frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in only 1of the 617 tetrads, but has since increased enormously.
