5.5 to 6.5 mm. Ranging from coppery bronze to almost black with studded elytra and the 2nd elytral interval as wide as the next three combined. The antennae are black with four basal segments yellow and the head and eyes are very large, even for Notiophilus. The legs are long and yellow-brown but with darker femora, particularly on the rear legs.

Possibly the only Notiophilus species that can be identified from a photo due to its pale legs, wide 2nd elytral interval and pale antennal base.

Often found among leaf litter or under logs in woodland, particularly in damp shaded areas.

Spring and summer.

Widespread in the south but local further north.

Infrequent and local in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 10 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
