5-8mm. Boldly patterned in greys (like a small Sarcophaga). Hairy eyes and a bare arista. The thorax has a broad, dark medial stripe - widening away from the head and four pairs of post-sutural dorsocentrals. The parafacialia are more or less bare under the frontal bristles. The dark scutellum has a pair of crossed apical bristles that are much shorter than the subapicals.

This is a member of a group of parisitoid flies that lay their eggs on or in the larvae of other insects.

Fairly widespread in southern Britain.

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland
