Wingspan about 12 mm. This species has been the subject of some confusion in the past with its close congener, N. cloacella. It tends to have paler brown markings in the forewing than that species.

Various habitats.

Adult moths can be found from June until early August, and are attracted to light.

The larvae feed on bracket fungus, especially those of the genus Coriolus, and on dead wood.

Occurring sparsely in parts of England and Wales, as well as southern Ireland. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as Nationally Scarce B.

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
