Wingspan around 12 mm. Although superficially similar to Cork Moth Nemapogon cloacella, the markings and overall appearance are generally much darker.

Well wooded areas.

The moths fly in June and July from late afternoon onwards.

The larvae feed on fungus and dead and decaying wood.

A local and rather scarce species occurring in the south of England northwards to Cumbria. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as Nationally Scarce B

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
