Cap initially convex then flattened and depressed in the centre.  Dark grey with a brownish grey centre, becoming paler as it dries. The margin is translucent and striate.  The gills are grey, decurrent; stipe grey-brown.   The smell is farinaceous or unpleasantly rancid.

This can be a difficult species to identify and we recommend that it is identified from a specimen by an expert before submission to NatureSpot.  Also photograph from top down, in side view and from underneath to show gills and full length of stipe.  Note smell, habitat and substrate.
