A small to medium-sized bolete associated mainly with beech.  The cap surface is smooth or finely felted, pruinose (with a white bloom) when young, plum-brown to red-brown, ageing to a dull yellowish or greyish-brown.  It has a narrow reddish margin. The pores are yellow and coarse.  The flesh is yellow and slowly stains blue in the cap at the top of the stem, and at the stem base.  Stem yellow with fine red dots. The mycelium is yellow. 

other Xerocomellus and Xerocomus.  Identification can be difficult, especially of younger and older specimens.. 

Photograph a fresh specimen from top down and in side view, and underneath to show pores and full length of stipe.  Note habitat and substrate. Check for staining on cap, pores and stem base when cut and then bruised.
