A large, often massive mushroom. The cap is 8 to 30 cm, creamy white or with a slight ochre tint that splits to reveal woolly or scaly patches.  It slowly stains yellow when cut or bruised.  Smells initially of almonds but then unpleasantly of urine. Stem height 10 to 14 cm. This species has the largest spores of all Agaricus species.  Spore print is brown.

There are several similar species - the toxic Yellow Stainer and some inedible related species quickly turn yellow when cut or bruised.

Found in soil amongst grass in pastures and meadows.

From early summer until autumn.

Widespread but infrequent in Britain.

Infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
