Description
About 8mm long it is a reddish brown beetle with a black head but darker, brown forms also occur.
Similar Species
Similar to L. ferrugineus, except this species has a dark head and also a dark end to the elytra.
Identification difficulty
Habitat
Found primarily in damp places in woodland, damp grassland and gardens. Look under stones, loose bark, in grass tussocks etc.
When to see it
Late spring and summer
UK Status
It is widespread and common in Britain
VC55 Status
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 40 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
