The 'saddle' of the female is black and widens posteriorly and terminates abruptly. The male has a red-brown, round body with a white ring around the eyes.

The male is very similar to L. rotundum but the ring round the eyes is pale in this species and black in L. rotundum.

Woodland and gardens.

Mainly from May to November.

Widespread and fairly common in most of England and Wales, but scarcer in the far north of England and in Scotland.

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
