Wingspan 25-35 mm. The adults of this species are relatively dull in coloration, having a plain light brown wing crossed by a wide band of darker brown, but the caterpillars are much more colourful, with orange, white and blue stripes on a dark brown ground colour.

Various habitats especially well wooded areas

The larvae feed gregariously in a web of silk, on Hawthorn, Blackthorn and other trees and shrubs.

Occurring quite frequently, mainly in the southern half of Britain. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
