This is a small, narrow, species (0.5 to 2 mm wide), being much branched with a characteristic pale brownish green colour and slightly upcurved margins. Branching tends to be at right angles. Species in this genus should generally be confirmed microscopically by examining the oil bodies in fresh specimens.

Prefers unshaded habitats in damp turf, wet heath, bogs or streamsides. It usually grows on soil or fine gravel but will also grows in rocky streams.
