Up to 5cm. A blue-grey foliose lichen with scalloped marginal lobes that are mostly turned down at the end and with tips that have a brown "singed" look. Coarse brown or dark grey soredia develop along the inner lobe margins. Apothecia are infrequent.

Hypotrachina revoluta has lobes that rise up from the substratum (more 3-dimensional), often with vertical twisted lobes, and with fine powdery soredia.

A good quality photograph. Note that only mature specimens can be identified.

On the bark of trees and shrubs and occasionally on weakly acidic rocks and walls. More common on the coast.
