Length about 7 mm. One of several similar Hilara species. Hilara curtisi has long bristles on the front metatarsus. Detailed examination is necessary in order to identify to species level.

Usually in damp habitats or near to water.

Summer.

The swollen front tarsi of the males produce silk which the fly uses to wrap prey as a courtship gift for the female.

Fairly widespread in England but exact status is difficult to determine due to problems of identification.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
